The McCarthy Way Counseling Clinic provides a wide range of therapy services to help individuals and families address the challenges affecting their behavior and/or mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Our licensed therapists are all trained in Trauma-Informed Care and can assist with nearly any issue that you or your family may be facing. Our clinic offers individual, family, couples and group therapy. We also provide an array of evidence-based specialties.

The Counseling Clinic accepts most insurance plans, including private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – Our DBT therapists focus on skill building to assist each client with regulating their emotions while developing healthy relationships and connections. The ultimate goal of DBT is to eliminate suicidal thoughts and to help the client find a life worth living. DBT suggests a one year commitment. Clients participate in one individual session per week and attend a weekly DBT skills group. DBT skills group is offered to adults age 18 or older. (DBT Therapists: Sarah Thiesfeldt, Katlynne Maguire, Shae Schartner)

ACORN is an evidence-based practice of using patient reported outcomes based on questionnaires that each client completes. The helps us ensure high-quality, effective treatment.

Katie Kocian, MS, LPC

Current Position: Licensed Professional Counselor

  • Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with concentrations in AODA and Child/Adolescent Care, UW-Stout
  • Bachelors of Science in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, UW-Stevens Point
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Experience

Has experience working with children (ages 5 and up), adults, couples, and families. Has provided mental health care in a variety of settings such as in-home, virtual, in-office, and school-based.

Specialties

Works with individuals (ages 5 and up) and families struggling with mental health and behavioral concerns. Provides treatment related to anger management, anxiety, depression, abuse and trauma, self-esteem, interpersonal issues, and relationship/family conflict.

Shae Schartner, MSW, APSW

Current Position: Therapist In-Training

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from UW-Milwaukee
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from UW-Milwaukee
  • Certified Advance Practice Social Worker (CAPSW)

Experience:

Shae has provided case management services to individuals and families in a variety of settings, including a homeless shelter, a foster care agency, and a prenatal clinic. She also has experience facilitating groups for adolescents and adults in an eating disorder treatment center. Shae has a graduate certificate in trauma-informed care from UW-Milwaukee, is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and is trained in Brainspotting Phases 1 and 2.

Specialties:

Shae works with individuals and families (ages 5 and up) to provide treatment related to stressful life events, anxiety, depression, trauma (including adoption trauma), anger management, self-esteem, eating disorders, and body image. Shae primarily utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Brainspotting.

Sarah Thiesfedlt, MSW, LCSW

  • Bachelors in Psychology and Criminology & Law Studies from Marquette University

Experience:

Sarah has been providing mental health care for adolescents and adults (ages 11 and up) since 2016. She has worked with adult men and women releasing from prison from 2007-2023, helping them to transition from prison to the community. Sarah also has experience facilitating Cognitive Behavioral Thinking groups as well as providing mental health case management services.

Specialties:

Sarah works with adults and adolescents (ages 11 and up). Sarah provides treatment related to depression, anxiety, trauma, anger management, communication, self-esteem, behavioral concerns, mental health disorders, and stress. She utilizes several therapeutic models such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Strength-Based Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Sarah is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Trauma-Informed Care.
