WIA Older Youth Program

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Older Youth Program is a federally funded program designed to improve the skills of our local workforce. The program specifically targets at-risk youth between the ages of 19 and 21 who are living in Brown, Oconto or Kewaunee County.

The program assists participants in the following areas:

  • Completion of HSED/GED

  • Career exploration

  • Enrollment in a technical college/university including financial assistance for post-secondary education in high demand career areas

  • Completion of Financial Aid forms

  • Financial Literacy

  • Connection with area resources

  • Can assist in covering child care costs

 

On average, individuals receive assistance from the program for 2 to 4 years, meeting with their case manager about once per month.

 

Admission Criteria:

Any youth who is living in Brown, Kewaunee, or Oconto County; between the ages of 19 and 21; and who have encountered any of the following challenges in their life is eligible to participate:

  • At or below 9th grade level in reading or math

  • School dropout

  • Homeless, runaway, or foster child

  • Pregnant or parenting

  • Interaction with the legal system

  • In an alternative school or identified as at-risk by their local school district

 

Program Cost:

There is no cost to participate in the WIA Older Youth Program. The program is offered free to participants through funding from the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, in partnership with Family Services and the Wisconsin Job Center.

In 2009, the WIA Older Youth program assisted 64 individuals.
